Research Project

In a follow-up design the effects of the implementation of social work at secondary schools in Heidelberg is evaluated.
The project starting at summer 2002 is sponsored by the youth welfare office of Heidelberg and realized in cooperation with the school authorities, local secondary schools and the University of Heidelberg. Baseline data as well as follow-up data 1, 2 and 3 years after the new engagement of social worker are analysed. Objective data about days absent at school, school success, professional training and occupation after leaving school or about costs of youth welfare service as well as questionnaire information asking students, school teachers and parents are collected and evaluated. First results of 1 year follow-up evaluation are encouraging. The social workers are well accepted by the schools. They give individual support for the students, offer group trainings for social competency and cooperate intensely with teachers and school directors. Their prevention orientated work could reduce youth welfare costs for individual help at 1 year follow-up.
