Welcome to the Department of Neurooncology
The Department of Neurooncology was founded in January 2007 with the support of the Hertie Foundation and is situated at the Neurocenter of the University Hospital Heidelberg. The Department of Neurooncology is the first independent academic department in Germany solely dedicated to treatment of and research on tumor diseases affecting the nervous system. These diseases include primary brain tumors, tumors metastatic to the brain, and diseases of the nervous system caused by tumors outside the nervous system or related to treatment of these tumors. We offer state-of-the-art treatment for both in-patients on our Neurooncology ward and out-patients in the National Center for Tumor Diseases in multidiscplinary setting with specialists from the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Radiation Oncology, Neuropathology and Neuroradiology. Patients can be referred for treatment within clinical trials , to optimize existing treatment plans or for a second opinion. We conduct both investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical trials in collaboration with the Neuro-Oncology Working Group (NOA) of the German Cancer Society and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer to evaluate novel therapeutic approaches for patients with brain tumors. Assistance for both patients and their relatives is provided through social service. Moreover we conduct basic science and preclinical research projects in collaboration with the German Cancer Research Center to develop innovative therapeutic strategies for the treatment of brain tumors using stem cell and immunological approaches. Finally, we utilize these immunological approaches to develop novel therapeutic concepts for patients with multiple sclerosis in collaboration with the Department of Neurology.
