Applying the Rights Based Approach in Achieving Health Related SDGs

The course meets for 1 week plus pre-reading for a total of 60 hours of SIT: 30 hours’ lectures/contact time, 15 hours group work and presentations, 15 hours self-directed learning (10 hours are allocated for pre-reading before course start and 5 additional hours for individual assignment after course). TropEd students can earn 2 ECTS points.


Entry Requirements

"Applying the Rights Based Approach in Achieving Health Related SDGs" is held in English. Course participants should have excellent command/high level of proficiency in reading, writing and speaking English. It's part time students only.


Content Overview

The course includes the following topics:

  • Theoretical framework and general concepts and principles of human rights, their relationship to and impact within the health sector
  • Rights based approach in achieving the promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to “leave no one behind,” with particular emphasis on health related SDGs.
  • Country case studies about integration of a human rights based approach into health policies, strategies, programming, implementation as well as monitoring and evaluation, with relation to indicators of health related SDGs
  • Policy briefs for advocating application of human rights principles in the health sector.
  • Roles of state and non-state actors in terms of rights-holders and duty-bearers

Learning Objectives

By the end of the Course participants should be able to:

  • Critically appraise the importance of the rights based approach in achieving the promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to “leave no one behind,” focusing on health related SDGs.
  • Debate key international, national and regional mechanisms designed to protect and promote human rights within the health sector.
  • Design strategies to advocate for and monitor the application of human rights principles in the health sector to achieve health related SDGs.

Course Fee

  • General Admittance: € 750.-
  • tropEd students: € 500.-

Included in the course fee is a non-refundable registration fee of € 200.-

Please register as soon as possible as the number of participants is limited.

Unfortunately, no Scholarships are available.

If the participant withdraws from the course

  • less than 6 weeks prior: 25 % of the course fee will be charged.
  • less than 4 weeks prior: 50 % of the course fee will be charged.
  • less than 2 weeks prior: the whole course fee will be charged.

The tuition fee does not include accommodation, insurance or other personal living costs during the stay.
