Dr. sc. hum. Andreas Deckert

Scientist


After developing an image analyzing tool for semi-automatic measurment of geographic atrophy areas in age related macular degeneration within a DFG funded project in his diploma thesis, Andreas Deckert started his professional career as a statistician at the Institute of Medical Biometry in Heidelberg. In 2008 he joined the Institute of Global Health, where he finalized his PhD on the health status of German repatriates in 2013. Since 2011 Andreas is responsible for a research project on chronic kidney diseases among HIV patients in Zambia.

Recently, he could launch a university partnership with CHRESO University in Lusaka, Zambia. Additionally, he is part of the FAARM project team. He has experience in planning, conducting and analyzing both experimental and observational studies, and in developing software tools in different programming languages. His research areas are (mental) health status of migrants in Germany, and non-communicable diseases in sub-Saharan Africa.

Projects

  • Renal Care Zambia (ReCaZa): Improving renal care for HIV patients and prevention of chronic kidney diseases (CKD) in Zambia by understanding the epidemiology of CKD and by building capacity of health workers
  • FAARM project Bangladesh: implementation of project management tools and structures
  • CONTEXT TEACH: university collaboration with CHRESO University in Lusaka, Zambia. Regular exchange of lecturers and short courses, setting up a Master's programme in Public Health
  • Completed: Changing risk factor patterns for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (CVD) in a large cohort of migrants (GRK 793)

Teaching

Andreas has several years of experience in teaching Medical Biometry in the medical student training Heicumed at the University of Heidelberg. Furthermore, he teaches Biometry and Epidemiology in the international Master’s programme Medical Biometry/Biostatistics at the University of Heidelberg. He is responsible for the organization of the elective course global health for medical students in Heidelberg, and for the implementation of an advanced epidemiology teaching for medical doctoral students. Andreas further contributes to DAAD weekend seminars on global health and to teaching in DAAD Alumni workshops (Myanmar, Pakistan). He has experience in conducting trainings and capacity building measures in Zambia.
