The division Pharmacoepidemiology investigates the use of drugs and (adverse) effects of drug therapy in populations to improve drug regimens with respect to effectiveness and safety. The Pharmacoepidemiology research group is committed to establish this relatively new scientific discipline at the University of Heidelberg as an integral part of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacoepidemiology. Conceptually, the identification of patient characteristics related to drug administration is used to enhance drug effectiveness and patient safety for the individual (i.e. towards an individualized drug therapy and personalized medicine) and populations.

  • Population-based cohort studies and interventional studies in primary care, analyses of secondary data potentially followed by interventions in cooperation with the health insurance statutory
  • Statistical and epidemiological consulting

Research Activities

Using medication data obtained from large population-based epidemiological studies or prescription claims databases, the research group investigates risk constellations in drug treatment and derives strategies for their prevention or management. The resulting findings can be used to  avoid or manage situations with increased risks. Current research activities focus on drug prescribing and drug administration in ambulatory patients. In this respect, particular attention is given to special populations (e.g., older people, frail patients, patients with poly-pharmacy, among others). A major aim is to identify risk factors threatening the safety and effectiveness of drug treatments. In addition, the section develops interventional strategies to detect problems in the drug administration of older outpatients and to improve their pharmacological treatments substantially.
