Forschungszentrum für Experimentelle Orthopädie

The prominent research activities cover the development of a stem cell based cartilage and bone regeneration. Research groups for Stem Cell Biology, Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Orthopaedics and Translational Research consist of scientists, post- and undergraduates, and technicians. The full range from an initial biological finding, its application in an in vitro culture system, the conversion to an improved bioimplant up to its verification in small and large animal models are experimentally covered.

The research facilities include laboratories that allow for the work with genetically modified organisms that are categorized into safety levels S1 and S2 (German GenTSV regulation) and are equipped with state of the art analytical devices for real-time PCR, flow cytometry and microscopy. A close collaboration with the Orthopaedical Hospital furthermore ensures access to human cartilage and bone material that can either be used for the isolation of primary cells or for the comparison of healthy and diseased tissue. Frequent exchange with external research groups of the field additionally contributes to a work environment that meets all prerequisites for innovative and promising approaches for the invention of stem cell based regenerative therapies.
