Close Cooperation in Health Care and Medical Research

Heidelberg University Hospital signs a contract with the Ministry of Health of Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health and Heidelberg University Hospital have agreed on a close cooperation in health care and medical science. A contract signed in Heidelberg on May 12th, 2010 by the Saudi Arabian Minister of Health H.E. Dr. Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al-Rabeeah and the Board of Heidelberg University Hospital aims for mutual exchange in health care, further education and medical research.

 

During his visit in Heidelberg, Dr. Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al-Rabeeah, an internationally renowned pediatric surgeon, was named “visiting professor” of the University of Heidelberg. In an Honorary Lecture he reported on his extensive experiences with surgery of Siamese twins in Saudi Arabia.

 

The contract between Heidelberg University Hospital and the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health includes many areas of cooperation, e.g. an exchange of medical experts, access to health care in Heidelberg for severely ill Saudi Arabian patients, joint academic events as well as training courses and research programs. 

 

“Saudi Arabia has a very high standard of health care,” stated the Executive Medical Director of Heidelberg University Hospital, Professor Dr. J. Rüdiger Siewert. “We are proud to intensify our cooperation with this contract.”

 

Heidelberg University Hospital is one of the leading medical centers in Europe. Every year, some 550,000 patients are treated on an outpatient and inpatient basis in more than 40 clinics and departments. Special emphasis is laid – in close cooperation with the German Cancer Research Center – on treatment of cancer patients in the National Center for Tumor Diseases NCT. The Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center HIT is the first of its kind in the world and since November 2009 offers innovative radiation treatment. Treatment of patients from the Arabic world and other countries has been facilitated in recent years by the establishment of an International Office

 

The Department of Surgery at Heidelberg University Hospital is one of the most prestigious surgical centers in Europe. Some of its main focuses are treatment of pancreas cancer and organ transplants.
