Special Consultation

Cystic Echinococcosis

Interdisciplinary cooperation with the Department of Surgery, the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology and the Department of Parasitology has made it possible for our section- especially our consultation on cystic echinococcosis - to establish itself as the German clinical reference centre with patients from all over Europe.

Our Section is a member of the university hospital's Center for Rare Diseases in Heidelberg.

The development of clinical expertise combined with the establishment of research programs has proven to be successful. It was mainly our section that acquired and coordinated the EU-funded project “From country level to a pan-European perspective: a coordinated approach to controlling cystic echinococcosis (EchinoNET)”. This resulted in different international functions: Thomas Junghanss is now chair of the “WHO Informal Working Group on Echinococcosis” (WHO-IWGE), and Marija Stojkovic is a member of the Steering Committee.

Cyst stages CE1–CE5 according to the WHO classification of cystic echinococcosis, the basis for the selection of the treatment modalities (1) drug treatment (albendazole), (2) percutaneous treatment (e.g. PAIR), (3) surgery, (4) ‘watch & wait’ (with completely inactive cysts, long-term monitoring without treatment)
