Functions of the Stomach

The stomach has two main functions: it is the first organ of the digestive tract and through its motor function, transports the food which it has broken down into the duodenum.


Position of the Stomach

The stomach is connected to the oesophagus at the upper end and to the duodenum ( the first part of the small intestine) at its lower end (pyloric) and is situated just below the diaphragm occupying the left upper abdomen, between the liver and the spleen. It lies on the pancreas.
