Skullbase Center

Skull Base Center – Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The skull base is a highly complex region where the facial skeleton, paranasal sinuses, orbit, and critical nerves and blood vessels are closely interconnected. Oral and maxillofacial surgery brings special expertise to this area, particularly in the precise removal of tumors, microsurgical reconstruction, and the restoration of form and function. The scope of treatment also includes malformations, skull base fractures, inflammatory conditions, as well as post-traumatic and postoperative defects. With the aid of state-of-the-art technology – such as navigation, intraoperative imaging, neuromonitoring, and high-resolution microscopy – even highly complex procedures can be performed safely and with minimal tissue damage.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical Focus Areas

  • Traumatology: Treatment of skull base fractures, including closure of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks and restoration of facial proportions.
  • Tumor Surgery: Removal of malignant tumors (e.g., squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma) with subsequent microsurgical reconstruction.
  • Benign Tumors: Gentle removal of osteomas, juvenile ossifying fibromas, and others using navigation and imaging techniques.
  • Reconstruction: Management of post-traumatic and postoperative defects with pedicled or free flap reconstructions.

Nerve Monitoring

Intraoperative Nerve Monitoring

During surgery, the function of critical nerves is continuously monitored. This allows the surgeon to treat tumors or defects safely while minimizing the risk of functional impairment.

Navigation

Intraoperative Navigation

A navigation system supports the surgeons much like a “GPS in the operating room.” It shows the exact position of the instruments within the skull, enabling particularly precise and gentle procedures.

Imaging

Intraoperative Imaging

With modern CT or MRI systems, up-to-date images can be generated during surgery. This allows treatment steps to be checked immediately and the results to be directly verified.

Operating Microscope

Operating Microscope

The microscope provides highly magnified, high-resolution visualization of even the finest structures. This enables maximum precision and safety during complex skull base procedures.
