In the pilot project the particle accelerator of the GSI Helmholtzzentrum for Heavy Ion Research (GSI), actually assigned for research projects, was extended by a patient treatment place. The GSI is one of the world’s leading centers for heavy ion research, accelerator technology and the development of highly precise radiation methods. From 1997 to 2008, about 400 patients with chordomas and chondrosarcomas of the skull base and 50 patients with adenoid cystic carcinomas of the salivary gland of the Clinic of Radiation Oncology and radiotherapy of Heidelberg University Hospital were treated at the GSI. Four project partners - the Clinic of Radiation Oncology and radiotherapy, the GSI Helmholtzzentrum for heavy ion research, the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the Helmholtzzentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) - were involved in this project.
Many of these patients who suffered from these malignant tumors that are difficult to treat using conventional radiation therapy could be treated successfully with particle therapy. The Klinik für Radioonkologie und Strahlentherapie has unique know-how in this area. The clinical studies were published.
