Section Clinical… Consultation Hours … Travel Medicine… Africa

If you are planning to go on a trip to Africa, we strongly recommend you to schedule an appointment for a personal pre-travel consultation, ideally 6-8 weeks before departure.

General information:

There is risk of malaria throughout the year in all countries of tropical and subtropical Africa. To prevent malaria an appropriate medication adapted to the travelling person and the destination is highly recommended.

Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio and Pertussis

Vaccines should be administered every ten years.

Yellow Fever

We strongly recommend yellow fever vaccination for West, Central and East Africa. Some countries require you to have a valid certificate for entry. The yellow fever vaccine should be administered at least two weeks before departure.

Hepatitis A and B

Active vaccination against Hepatitis A and B is recommended in general.

Meningococcal Meningitis, Typhoid and Rabies

Depending on the destination, time and conditions of travel, vaccinations against typhoid, meningococcal meningitis and rabies might also be necessary. A personal consultation is indispensable.

WHO recommends cholera vaccination for high risk groups (e.g. emergency relief workers) only.
