New Heidelberg Research Group on "Climate Change and Health in sub-Saharan Africa" funded through the German Research Foundation (DFG)

Great success for the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health at the Heidelberg University Hospital: Heidelberg scientists are in charge of a DFG research group on "Climate Change and Health in sub-Saharan Africa". The interdisciplinary research group focuses on global health problems in times of climate change covering a wide range of research disciplines, such as climate research, economics, politics, medicine, geography, agriculture and mathematical modeling. "Climate change in Africa, among other things, leads to an increase in malaria, child malnutrition and heat stress. We are investigating the extent of this damage to health and are preparing forecasts for the year 2050 under different climate scenarios. In addition to the accurate recording of climate-related health damage, the scientists are also testing the effectiveness of possible adaptation measures in intervention studies”, says the spokesman for the research group, Prof. Dr. Rainer Sauerborn. The new consortium comprises eleven individual projects and nine research institutes in Germany, Switzerland, Burkina Faso and Kenya and will run for about three years - with the possibility of extension.
