Global Health Academy 2021

Dear colleagues, students, and friends,
we, the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health,  are happy to invite you to the Global Health Academy 2021 which  is co-organized by the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health and the Institute of Global Health of the University of Geneva. The two days conference on 'COVID-19 and Equity: Regional and Global Challenges' is free of charge and will be held online on the 2nd and 3rd November 2021.

It offers plenary talks, given by experts in the field, that cover topics on the virology of Covid-19, global strategies regarding prevention and response, as well as equity and access to diagnostic tools. There are a number of interesting workshops for students and young researchers - ranging from GIS and Geospatial tools, over how to write scientific articles, to a real-time simulation game of a health crisis (IHR 3.0).

For the panel discussion on November 3rd we welcome Karl Lauterbach (Member of the Deutsche Bundestag), Catherine Kyobutungi (Executive Director of the African Population and Health Research Center, Nairobi, Kenya), Michael Stolpe (Global Health Economics, Kiel Institute for the World Economy), and Sam Phiri (Programs Director at Partners in Hope Malawi), among others.

Students are encouraged to submit a short abstract to present an online poster.
For more information and registration, please visit us at: https://global-health-academy.de/

With warm wishes,
the Global Health Academy organization team

The early German response to SARS-CoV-2: Perspectives from a guinea-pig patient

With daily scientific and media updates on SARS-CoV-2 the public interest in the world’s biggest global health issue at present, the so-called novel corona-virus continues unabated. I became known as the first case in my home city in early March, a fame I could have done without.

New Heidelberg Research Group on "Climate Change and Health in sub-Saharan Africa" funded through the German Research Foundation (DFG)

Great success for the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health at the Heidelberg University Hospital: Heidelberg scientists are in charge of a DFG research group on "Climate Change and Health in sub-Saharan Africa". The interdisciplinary research group focuses on global health problems in times of climate change covering a wide range of research disciplines, such as climate research, economics, politics, medicine, geography, agriculture and mathematical modeling. "Climate change in Africa, among other things, leads to an increase in malaria, child malnutrition and heat stress. We are investigating the extent of this damage to health and are preparing forecasts for the year 2050 under different climate scenarios. In addition to the accurate recording of climate-related health damage, the scientists are also testing the effectiveness of possible adaptation measures in intervention studies”, says the spokesman for the research group, Prof. Dr. Rainer Sauerborn. The new consortium comprises eleven individual projects and nine research institutes in Germany, Switzerland, Burkina Faso and Kenya and will run for about three years - with the possibility of extension.
