DTG-Certified Travel Medicine Course for Physicians

In response to the increasing demand for travel medicine advice and the requirements of university institutions, we have reorganized our area of responsibility for the preventive care of travellers. Three factors gave rise to this:

Germany's few tropical medicine facilities are unable to meet the increasing demand for advice from travelers to the tropics and subtropics.

In order to be effective across the board, from a public health perspective such preventive services should be taken over as far as possible by the primary care sector.

Following this insight and with the aim of simultaneously achieving national standardization in travel medicine advice (malaria prophylaxis, vaccinations), the German Society for Tropical Medicine, Travel Medicine and Global Health (DTG) has created a curriculum for certified training (Prof. T. Junghanss was actively involved in this development as a member of the DTG board). The course consists of a basic module (4 days) and a one-day refresher module.

The Department of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine was one of the first tropical medicine institutions in Germany to offer this certified course. We have now trained over 400 colleagues in the region.
