Dengue Tools: Innovative Tools and Strategies for Surveillance and Control of Dengue

Dengue is a mosquito-born infection that has become a major public health problem in the past few decades. More than 2.5 billion people are at risk of dengue. Current surveillance systems and control strategies are insufficient to combat dengue in endemic countries and prevent its introduction into dengue-free parts of the world, including Europe. 

DengueTools is an international consortium of 14 partner institutions based in South East Asia, South Asia, South America and various centres in Europe.  The strategic aim of this collaborative project is to develop an integrated international research capacity on dengue with partners from the North and South. 

DengueTools aims to address a set of identified gaps in three distinct research areas: (i) dengue surveillance, (ii) dengue prevention, and (iii) risk of dengue introduction to uninfected areas. To cover these research areas specific to the European FP7 call, DengueTools developed 11 work packages and one infrastructural line managed and disseminated by work package 12. 

Dr. Yesim Tozan of the Institute of Public Health leads a cross-cutting work package on “Economic Evaluation and Evidence Informed Policies” (WP11) and will work closely with three other work packages. The main objectives of WP11 is to undertake economic evaluations of (i) an integrated dengue surveillance system in Sri Lanka (WP1), (ii) a school-based preventive intervention against dengue in Thailand (WP4), and (iii) to translate the findings into evidence-informed policy making on dengue prevention and surveillance (WP12).
