Research and participation in scientific studies

Although the use of naturopathy and complementary medicine (CAM) is widespread especially among women and patients suffering form cancer, there are few studies about risks, benefits and compatibility with the standard therapy. Standard therapy such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy as advised by oncologists is always recommended in cancer patients, because they cannot be replaced by a complementary treatment.

As there is missing evidence for the widespread use of various methods of CAM, it is absolutely necessary to carry out scientific studies. In most cases, they require the active participation of patients who are examined and treated with particular care. Through their participation, they can help to ensure that their desired therapies can subsequently be recommended generally and paid for in the future by the German health insurance when their efficacy and safety have been confirmed.

As a matter of course treatment with naturopathy or complementary medicine is free of charge if administered as part of a scientific study

When a study involving the University Hospital for Women is planned, the Ethics Committee of the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University ensures that the patients’ rights and good health is protected and respected
