„We strive for excellence in our research, teaching and education programmes to contribute to better health outcomes for the German population“

The Department of General Practice and Health Services Research provides a bridging function between academic research and primary care in general practices. Within the framework of HeiCuMed, the Heidelberg reformed curriculum for undergraduate medical education, medical students now encounter the exciting specialty of General Practice from their first semester. Twice a year, we deliver our continuing education event “Days of General Practice”, which provides a platform for researchers, educators and practitioners to come together. This includes medical colleagues and nursing staff from more than 400 general practice teams in the region, among which are 200 academic teaching practices as well as 55 academic research practices that have been accredited by the Medical Faculty Heidelberg. In addition, we coordinate the general practice trainee programme i.e. Kompetenzzentrum Weiterbildung Baden-Württemberg (KWBW) from our department.

The KWBW general practice trainee programme is part of a strategy to counteract increasing workforce shortages of general practitioners. It is delivered in cooperation with the Baden-Württemberg Hospital Society, the Baden-Württemberg Co-ordination Office for General Practice, the Medical Council of Baden-Württemberg as well as the departments of General Practice from the universities of Freiburg, Tübingen and Ulm.

We are renowned in the field of health services research and implementation science in Germany and Europe. The large interdisciplinary team at our department conducts research projects across a broad spectrum of complex themes and contributes actively to knowledge generation through numerous national and international publications. In addition, our department houses the coordinating office for “Health Services Research Baden-Württemberg”, which has its own graduate academy to mentor and develop young researchers in this field.

A key factor in maintaining quality patient care outcomes in complex health systems is effective interprofessional collaboration between the health professions. The newly established role of W3-Professor of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences in 2018 highlights the clear commitment to this philosophy within the Department of General Practice and Health Services Research and the Medical Faculty Heidelberg.

We are particularly proud to be trusted with programme co-ordination for two new degree programmes at the Medical Faculty Heidelberg. The Bachelor of Science in Interprofessional Health Care was established in 2011. This programme is offered in formal co-operation with the Academy for Health Professions Heidelberg gGmbH, the Centre for Vocational Training at the University Hospital Mannheim GmbH and numerous colleagues from the University and the University Hospital Heidelberg. The Master of Science in Health Services Research and Implementation Science in Healthcare was established in 2015. The Bachelor of Science and the Master of Science programmes are funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and Art Baden Württemberg.

We appreciate your interest in our department. We welcome inquiries through the provided email addresses and telephone numbers.
