Institute of Experimental Cardiology

Dear visitors and colleagues,

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) represent the most frequent causes for morbidity and mortality worldwide. Heart failure is often the consequence of CVD (e.g. myocardial infarction, high blood pressure or hereditary and inflammatory cardiomyopathies). Until today, the only cure of heart failure is heart transplantation. All other pharmacological or interventional therapies help to reduce symptoms and in some cases the mortality from heart failure but a restoration of cardiac dysfunction is not possible yet.

It is therefore our mission to focus on research to understand the fundamental mechanisms of cardiac dysfunction and to translate basic findings into novel therapeutic concepts. We are encouraged by recent paradigm-shifting research findings, highlighting that cardiac dysfunction is driven by coordinated changes in gene expression. We have started to identify the underlying regulators of gene expression at the level of the chromatin and RNA. We are convinced that a detailed molecular understanding of these regulators will enable us to develop new therapeutic principles, aiming at the reversal of disease-causing gene expression. We combine creative approaches for discovery with rigorous experimental approaches for proof-of-concept experiments in disease models.

The Institute of Experimental Cardiology builds on international people at all educational levels. Close collaborations with partners from basic research institutions and clinical departments provide the unique opportunity for mutual interactions. The Institute is equipped with state-of-the art instruments required for genetic, molecular, biochemical, cellular and in vivo studies and is currently under intense development. New groups will join the Institute of Experimental Cardiology to build a critical mass of investigators who will tackle together one of the most important health problems of our time.
