The opening ceremony for the Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center HIT was held on November 2nd, 2009. Treatment of the first patients will commence in the coming weeks. The clinical studies for Heavy Ion Research, that began at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum facility in Darmstadt, will be continued. Previously completed studies have proven with success the high efficacy of ion beam therapy for specific types of tumors.
Heidelberg University Hospital is proud to operate a therapy center, unique in the world, which will not only help many patients, but also lead to a confirmed scientific basis for new cancer therapies.
