Honorary doctorate from Uppsala University for Professor Hugo Katus

Summary

Professor Hugo Katus, Senior Professor of Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Heidelberg University Hospital, has been awarded an honorary Doctorate from Uppsala University in recognition of his pioneering work in cardiology.

Katus' scientific career is closely linked to the remarkable history of the troponin T test and marks one of the most significant milestones in cardiology. His pioneering research since the late 1980s led to the discovery and development of troponin T, first as a biomarker for myocardial infarction and later for a variety of other heart diseases, revolutionising their diagnosis and treatment worldwide. His work, which began at Harvard University and was later consistently continued at Heidelberg University Hospital, laid the foundation for more accurate and timely detection of heart damage, which has saved countless lives and prevented severe cases.

"The award of an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University to Prof. Hugo Katus not only recognises his exceptional contribution to research, but also honours the development of the Troponin T test as a model of scientific innovation and perseverance. As a leading expert in the field of cardiology, Professor Hugo Katus has not only made extensive further decisive contributions to translational research, for example in the field of cardiomyopathies and gene therapy, but has also inspired numerous young researchers and clinicians. His passion for the advancement of medical science and his pursuit of excellence are a role model for future generations far beyond the field of cardiology," said Professor Norbert Frey, Director of the Department of Cardiology, Angiology and Pneumology at Heidelberg University Hospital and successor to Hugo Katus.

Katus has worked as a senior physician at Heidelberg University Hospital since 1986, as a specialist in Internal Medicine since 1987 and as a specialist in Cardiology since 1988. In 1996 he took the position of Medical Director of the Medical Clinic II for Cardiology, Angiology, Pneumology, Haemostaseology and Psychosomatics at the University Hospital Lübeck. In 2002, he returned to Heidelberg as C4 Professor of Internal Medicine and Medical Director of the Department of Cardiology, Angiology and Pneumology, and since 2005 also as Spokesman of the Centre of Internal Medicine at Heidelberg University Hospital. In October 2020, he handed over his position to Professor Norbert Frey.
