Surgery of Congenital Heart Defects in Children and Adults

Each year, about 350 operations of congenital heart defects are performed at the Clinic for Cardiac Surgery. All perioperative diagnostic and therapeutic equipment is available for a state-of-the-art treatment of all patients in all areas.

Corresponding to their age and complex condition, our patients are treated in very close cooperation with the Clinic for Paediatric Cardiology (Director: Prof. Dr. med. Matthias Gorenflo) of the University Clinics Heidelberg.

All cases with pending surgery at our clinic are discussed in detail in a weekly interdisciplinary conference where the individual indications are determined. The referring private and hospital physicians connected via a nationwide competence network (managed by Prof. Dr. H.E. Ulmer) are informed in detail about the results of such conferences, the post-operative recovery of our patients and the follow-up treatment and care. In addition, two paediatric cardiological colloquia (managed by Prof. Dr. H.E. Ulmer) take place in cooperation with the Clinic for Cardiac Surgery. Here, specific topics are treated in lectures and specific case studies are discussed for the benefit of referring colleagues.

At the University Clinics Heidelberg, the required additional special departments are available for the interdisciplinary treatment of our patients at any time ”24 hours a day / 7 days a week“. Apart from the very close cooperation with the Clinic for Paediatric Cardiology, the anaesthesiology and child surgery departments, all special departments of the paediatric clinic including the treatment of so-called premature infants, nephrology, vascular surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, paediatric radiology, genetic section, haematooncology, hygiene institute, coagulation lab, and the histopathological institute are included closely in the treatment.

This also includes so-called special ventilation and support techniques (e.g. ECMO, NO, oscillation) and endoscopic procedures as well as all technical and therapeutical options including support and assist systems.
