Complementary (naturopathic) forms of therapy for holistic health

More and more patients and physicians are increasingly turning to naturopathic, complementary forms of therapy to support the healing process for a variety of diseases. However, it often remains unclear how the effect is achieved.

The Academic Center for Complementary & Integrative Medicine (AZKIM) is dedicated to scientific research into the efficacy and safety of naturopathic and complementary medical procedures. Through rigorous scientific investigations, we analyze the molecular and immunological effects of herbal active agents, nutrition, acupuncture, and mind-body medicine—particularly in the supportive treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases and tumor diseases.

What makes AZKIM unique is its combination of basic biomedical research, (pre)clinical research, and health services research. We investigate not only the mechanisms of action, but also the best possible integration of these procedures into medical care.

A goal for the future - integrative medicine in Baden-Württemberg

In line with the "WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025-2034", we are committed to establishing comprehensive, science-based integrative medicine in Baden-Württemberg. IOur aim is to combine complementary and conventional methods in such a way that they complement each other and ensure the best possible care for patients.

AZKIM pursues a holistic approach that not only promotes the healing process but also focuses on maintaining health through (primary and secondary) prevention. We also attach great importance to strengthening the health literacy of the population and disseminating knowledge about complementary therapies.

Practical knowledge – for the education and training of healthcare professionals

Our findings are directly incorporated into the education and training of physicians and nursing staff. This allows modern, complementary approaches to be applied directly in patient care, further improving the quality of treatment.

One of AZKIM's added values is its independent advisory service – for both patients and healthcare professionals. This ensures that evidence-based, trustworthy information is available at all times.

Since 2016, AZKIM's work has been supported by the Ministry of Science and the Arts of the State of Baden-Württemberg, and since 2020 it has been part of the research and practice initiative: Complementary and Integrative Healthcare Baden-Württemberg (KIG BaWü) as part of the state government's “Forum Gesundheitsstandort Baden-Württemberg” (Baden-Württemberg Health Location Forum). This funding underscores the importance of our work for the future development of integrative medicine.
