Disease definition

Epileptic seizures are a common neurological disorder and occur in about 10% of the total population during their lifetime, but only up to 1% of these patients suffer from epilepsy. In this case, there is a permanent increased susceptibility to epileptic seizures.

A particularly serious special form of epileptic seizures is status epilepticus. Status epilepticus is clinically defined as:

a) a prolonged epileptic seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes (for generalized tonic-clonic seizures) or 10-15 minutes (for focal seizures or absences), or

b) a series of two or more epileptic seizures without regaining consciousness between seizures.
