Neurotoxicity

Disease definition

The term neurotoxicity covers a wide range of damage to the nervous system caused by tumor therapy or the tumor itself. This includes nerve damage (known as neuropathies) caused by drug-based chemotherapy, which can often lead to abnormal sensations and numbness, unsteadiness, but also paralysis and vegetative symptoms (sweating, digestive disorders, circulatory dysregulation). These side effects can occur acutely and temporarily, but can also be long-term. Treatment includes balance training and drug therapy for painful polyneuropathy. Sometimes these conditions must be distinguished from paraneoplastic phenomena caused by the antigenic properties of the tumor itself.
