Children in the hospital

Children are treated at Heidelberg University Hospital in the Centre for Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Please find out about the treatment options directly on the relevant websites. Here we will inform you about special services offered at the Centre for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine.

If you can stay with your child around the clock, we will support this. If your child is up to 6 years old, a parent can be admitted to most wards free of charge. If the space available on the ward allows, it is also possible to stay overnight on a cot with your child. Of course, there are also medical reasons why a parent may be admitted free of charge for children over the age of 6. The decision in this regard lies with the medical staff.

If it is not possible to stay overnight on the ward, you can either sleep in one of the parents' rooms in the dormitory next to the old paediatric clinic (Im Neuenheimer Feld 154) or in one of the 16 parents' flats at the Angelika Lautenschläger Clinic (new paediatric clinic, Im Neuenheimer Feld 430).

As an alternative to inpatient admission, there is the option of living in one of a total of 16 flats. These are located directly next to the paediatric clinic (INF 430) and are connected to the paediatric clinic by a corridor and via the garden.

Each flat is 17 square metres in size and is equipped with sleeping facilities for two people, a bathroom, television, fridge and telephone. Cooking is done in a kitchen-cum-living room, which also serves as a common room for parents to socialise. A washing machine and tumble dryer are available. Bed linen is provided, but you must bring your own towels.

The clinic charges a contribution towards expenses of 7 euros plus VAT per night. A one-off flat rate of 35 euros plus VAT is charged for the final cleaning. The daily fee does not apply if you are accommodated in one of the parents' rooms in the dormitory in building INF 154 (next to the old paediatric clinic). From there it is a five-minute walk to the new paediatric clinic.

Please note that overnight accommodation costs in the parents' dormitory cannot be claimed from the health insurance fund if you are also admitted to the ward.

The playrooms are assigned to the individual wards. From Monday to Friday, generally from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the children are looked after by our educational staff. Please understand that siblings cannot be looked after in the playrooms. Our Kinderplanet is available for siblings.

There are also playrooms for children admitted as inpatients in the entrance area of the Kopfklinik and in the paediatric clinic. The playroom in the head clinic is also equipped with a nappy-changing room and a children's toilet.

The majority of children who are hospitalised at the clinic are seriously ill. In addition to worrying about the sick child, parents are naturally also concerned about how and where their healthy siblings can be cared for and looked after during this time. The "Kinderplanet" has been offering help in these cases since 1995. Here, children of all ages can play, read, learn, listen to music and sleep in expert and loving care - free of charge and without prior registration.

The "Kinderplanet" is located on the level of the outpatient clinics in the Angelika Lautenschläger Klinik (Im Neuenheimer Feld 430). Opening hours are all day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., including holiday periods, except at weekends and on public holidays.

The donation-financed facility is run by the parents' association "Aktion für krebskranke Kinder e.V. Heidelberg".

The Centre for Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine on level 02 has its own library with more than 5,000 books, DVDs and CDs for children and adolescents. Borrowing is free of charge. During opening hours, the staff go around the wards with a book trolley and visit the children at their bedsides.
