Science and Research

We do research for the next generation!

Our international teams of researchers are faced with enormous challenges, as the fields of pediatric oncology, hematology and pulmonology comprise many, and frequently very serious, illnesses. However, our scientists are experts in basic research such as molecular biology, they develop pre-clinical models to test new therapies before using them to treat patients, and they work on modern diagnostic methods and new research-based strategies to improve treatment.

Our research has provided us with many insights into the molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of common diseases.

The great success of our research is due to our team's dedication and willingness to cooperate across disciplinary boundaries in order to answer the great questions of the respective research fields. Our scientists also benefit from our location: As one of Germany's top biomedical research centers, Heidelberg offers a unique network that includes the hospitals and institutes of the medical faculty, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (Opens external link in new windowEMBL) and the German Cancer Research Center (Opens external link in new windowDKFZ).

Our research at the Department of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology, Immunology and Pulmonology has two main focal areas: Opens internal link in current windowpediatric oncology, hematology and immunology  (leukemias and solid tumors, benign blood disorders, disorders of the iron metabolism, congenital immunodeficiencies) and Opens internal link in current windowpediatric pulmonology, allergology and cystic fibrosis (severe lung diseases like cystic fibrosis and allergic diseases). On this site, you will find detailed background information about our work and funding, and many additional links to related pages.

The Opens internal link in current windowScientific Collaborations page describes our connections to the Clinical Cooperation Unit Pediatric Oncology at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the Molecular Medicine Partnership Unit (MMPU) at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the pediatric oncology and hematology research networks of the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1036, as well as the Department of Translational Pulmonology and the Translational Lung Research Center Heidelberg (TLRC), a research location of the German Center for Lung Research (DZL).

Our state-of-the-art research laboratories are located in the modern facilities of the medical faculty at Opens external link in new windowOtto- Meyerhof Zentrum.  Scientists of the department also work in the laboratories of our cooperation partners in the Department of Radiation Oncology, at the DKFZ and at the EMBL.
