Pediatric Brain Tumor Unit

Children and adolescents with brain or spinal tumors present a special challenge to diagnostics, therapy, follow-up care and psychooncological patient care.

Headed by Opens internal link in current windowProf. Dr. med. Olaf Witt, the team of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Unit cares for patients and their families in close cooperation with colleagues from Pediatric Neurosurgery, Pediatric Neuroradiology, Radiation Therapy, Psychooncology, Neuropediatrics and Pediatric Neurooncology (DKFZ).

Our in-house patients and outpatients are discussed in regularly scheduled interdisciplinary Brain Tumor Boards and advised according to their individual needs. Therapy follows the latest protocols of the Brain Tumor Network (HIT) of the Society for Pediatric Oncology and Hematology (GPOH) as well as innovative phase I/II studies. In addition, we offer our patients psychosocial services, schooling support, and a comprehensive music and sports therapy program. One of our top priorities is to provide personalized advice including neuropsychological testing to brain tumor patients in the follow-up phase.

The unit's Second Opinion Board regularly discusses complex cases, with due regard to the latest molecular genetic findings of pediatric neurooncology. Opens external link in new windowPlease note our Guidelines when making inquiries.

A board for personalized therapy ensures that brain tumor patients who have suffered a relapse or whose tumor continues to grow after standard treatment receive personalized advice by a team of experienced doctors and researchers in cooperation with the National Center for Tumor Diseases (Opens external link in new windowNCT). It is the unit's particular concern to translate the latest findings on the molecular causes of childhood brain tumors, their risk assessment and new therapeutic methods into innovative, personalized and specific treatment concepts. This is done in close cooperation with the Opens external link in new windowdepartments of Pediatric Neurooncology and Opens external link in new windowCCU Pediatric Oncology of the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg.
