Skin and systemic immunity
Once educated in the draining lymph node mainly T cells and to a minor degree B cells tend to return to the skin. The systemic immune system thus impacts back on the skin. It is in the skin, where the now educated adaptive T cells meet the skin milieu – and determine the ultimate outcome of the immune response (Waisman/Kurschus). Endothelial cells (Olaru/Schäkel), keratinocytes (Pichler/Kneilling, Hadaschik/Enk), or fibroblasts (Schuppan/Steinbrink) can all be effectors and targets of these immune responses.
