Surgical resection is usually the first treatment choice for pancreatic cancer and hepatobiliary tumors (Hepatocellular carcinoma: HCC, cholangiocellular carcionma: CCC, gall blader cancer and liver metastasis). Unfortunately, a significant amount of these tumors cannot be resected due to the extent of the tumor or due to the general condition of the patients. In this situation, radiation therapy is an important treatment alternative.

Although there has been signficiant progress and technical improvement over the last decades, radiation therapy often is limited in terms of radiation dose or precision. This is mostly due to the fact that radionsensitive abdominal organs are situated adjacent to the tumor. Using modern radiation techniques such as particle therapy, stereotactic radiotherapy or MR-guided radiotherapy could significantly increase treatment efficacy for these patients.

The study group pancreatic cancer and hepatobiliary tumors of the Department of Radiation Oncology (Heidelber University Hospital) is investigating the implementation and the optimization of modern radiation techniques. The group focuses on translational research („from bench to bedside“) and on physical and technical optimization of radiation planning.
