RADIATION THERAPY FOR PATIENTS WITH BREAST CANCER

The working group Senology in Radiation Oncology focuses on researching modern radiation techniques and methods and aims at improving the care of patients with breast cancer. We center our research on the patients‘ individual needs. This is done by Increased personalization of therapy and an individual risk adaptation.

Radiation therapy is one of the cornerstones of multimodal therapy avoiding mastectomy (complete breast removal) in cases of localized breast cancer. However, adjuvant radiation is still a crucial factor for long-term local tumor control after breast-conserving surgery. Due to constant improvements of radiation technology and concepts, radiation therapy today is highly effective with minimal side-effects.

The focus of our current research is to enable de-escalation of therapy in patients with low risk of recurrence and an escalation of radiotherapy in patients with high risk of recurrence by risk-adapted as well as individualized tailored treatments and the use of new radiation techniques. For example, in the case of early breast cancer, there is great potential to spare doses and further toxicity by reducing radiation fields and shortening the duration of treatment without jeopardizing the success of radiation treatment.

Within the framework of these research approaches, we are conducting a large number of innovative clinical studies in close collaboration with our colleagues of the department of gynaecology.
