RESEARCH GROUP “CLIMATE-SMART HEALTH SYSTEMS”

Group Leader:

Herrmann, geb. Vandenbergh, Alina, M.D., PhD
Alina Herrmann is the leader of the junior research group. She has been working on selected topics of climate-smart health care since her doctoral thesis, in which she investigated general practitioners' role in protecting elderly in heat waves. As a post-doc she shifted her focus to research on climate-friendly and healthy lifestyles. Currently she works on analyzing the healthfulness and sustainability of diets, conceptualizing climate sensitive health counseling and reducing greenhouse gas emissions of hospitals. Furthermore, she is interested to integrate these topics into the training of the health workforce.

Krippl, Nicola Doctoral Student (Dr. med.)

Nicola Krippl is a fourth year medical student from Mannheim, holding a B.A. in Political Science. She has a keen interest in societal impacts of climate change and climate change communication.

Her research project aims to provide a practical guide on how health professionals can address climate change in patient counselling. Therefore she is working on a quantitative study with the aim to reveal the general public’s preferences regarding topics and communication methods of climate-sensitive health counselling and to characterize how socioeconomic characteristics and climate change attitudes are associated with these preferences.

Lamkemeyer, Lisa-Maria

Lisa-Maria Lamkemeyer is a dentist, medical student (University of Cologne), research associate at the Institute of Global Health (project: PlaN-Med) and doctoral student (project: KliOL). In the project PlaN-Med, under the lead of Dr. Alina Herrmann and Dr. Till Bugaj, she works on elaborating and implementing a curriculum for planetary health within the medical education of students at the University of Heidelberg to raise awareness of reinforcing climate change-induced risks to health and well-being. For her doctoral thesis she aims to design, implement and evaluate modifications of the prescription process for metered-dosed inhalers to reduce GHG emissions at the UKHD. The study is part of the KliOL project (Klimaschutz an Kliniken durch Optimierung von Lieferketten/ Climate Protection in Clinics through Optimization of the Supply Chain) led by Dr. Alina Herrmann, in cooperation with the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IFEU).

Nieder, Jessica , cand. Dr. sc. hum.,

Jessica Nieder has a background in Health Psychology. She has been involved in projects concerning climate change and health in medical education as well as the general public’s preferences regarding topics and communication methods of climate-sensitive health counselling. Currently, she is working as a researcher in the AdaptNet-Project.

She has been a doctoral student at the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health since 2020. Her dissertation focuses on Digitalizing medical education in Zambia.

Kriit, Hedi Post-Doc

Hedi Kriit is a post-doctoral fellow and her project will focus on assessing the health and economic burden of heatwaves in Germany using machine learning methods. Hedi Kriit has a master in Public Health with a specification towards health economics. She was awarded with the best master thesis after her studies. Her PhD from Umeå Univeristy was an interdisciplinary work where she assessed the health and economic effect of sustainable transport solutions. She has also studied both short and long-term air pollution health effects. She has been successful co-applicant writing both national and international grants during her PhD studies. Her interest is applying statistical methods for estimating health effects of environmental stressors using observational data. She thrives working interdisciplinary by linking knowledge and methods from climate, health and economics. With an aim to provide for more complete understanding of climate change health effects that are occurring and currently unaccounted for in policy making.

Rybol, Leonie Doctoral Student

Leonie Rybol is a fifth year medical student at Heidelberg university working in the project branch ClimMedEd (Climate change in medical education) since February 2021.

Her research focus lays on advancing medical education by shifting the focus towards a more climate change oriented health perspective. Her project evolved around the development of a questionnaire about climate change and health for Heidelberg and Paris medical students assessing their knowledge, role perceptions and teaching preferences. The evaluation aims to investigate knowledge gaps and interests of students to sustainably adapt future medical school curriculars in order to educate competent physicians in a world that is challenged by the health effects of climate change.
