Bioinformatics researcher and developer – circular RNAs (m/f/d)

The division of Bioinformatics and Systems Cardiology at the Klaus Tschira Institute for Integrative Computational Cardiology develops software to study the role of RNA in cardiac disorders (https://github.com/dieterich-lab). Specifically, circular RNAs originate from linear transcripts through back-splicing, show tissue-specific expression profiles, are conserved across species, yet are poorly characterized in heart disease. The advertised position is located in Heidelberg, Im Neuenheimer Feld 669. In-person or hybrid work models are possible.

Profile

The successful applicant will extend and modernize our software suite circtools (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30462173), enters a collaborative research environment and contributes to cardiac circular RNA research in the Dieterich Lab. The position involves working with common solution stacks (Linux, Python, R) for bioinformatics software development. The applicant will comply with essential elements of modern software development (e.g. continuous integration), version control and containerization.

Required Qualifications

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in computer science, bioinformatics, or a comparable relevant background and level of expertise. In addition to very good Linux administration skills (i.e. software management, shell and scripting languages), the ideal candidate has a proven record in Python and R programming in established software frameworks. The applicant is also expected to be familiar with team-based software development via GitHub. Fluent spoken and written English is expected. Required soft skills: ability to communicate and work in teams, flexibility and targeted action. Knowledge of computational RNA algorithms and approaches is a plus.

Front-end web developer for Digital Heart Research Portal (m/f/d)

We build a pilot preclinical data analysis portal for the cardiovascular community, which hosts open public and private data sets and offers a data owner centric use and access management.

This portal will initially focus on bulk RNA-seq and single cell RNA-seq data as this type of data is well standardized, broadly available in the cardiovascular community and ready to be used with available data analysis portal solutions.

Our portal will enable scientists of all backgrounds to analyze, visualize and integrate their data sets with the wealth of existing DZHK and other published RNA-seq data sets from human and experimental model systems.

To accomplish this project, we are looking for a (junior) front-end or full-stack developer, with a good understanding of common solution stacks for building and delivering appealing web-based applications (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Python, JavaScript).

Tasks

The successful applicant will significantly contribute to an existing online portal, the Digital Heart Research Portal, and will

  • work with and further develop an existing code base using a test-driven development approach, and building reusable code for future use;
  • collaborate with team members to extend the functionalities of the portal. Specifically, the front end will be the focus here;
  • address potential issues related to the existing design/rendering of the graphical interface;
  • be able to evaluate the web performance, render time, web design responsiveness, etc. and suggest improvements to the code base.

Required Qualifications

The successful applicant should have a Master’s degree in a relevant field or a comparable relevant background and proven level of expertise. Please provide references to projects or source code. The applicant must have a proven proficiency in coding languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript (AJAX, jQuery, or similar), and some knowledge of functional testing (e.g. Selenium browser automation). We expect the applicant to be familiar with team-based software development using version control/Git. Proficiency in handling large-scale scientific data sets, and additional knowledge of Python, CGI programming, MySQL, PHP, and/or Linux (shell and scripting languages) is a plus. Fluent spoken and written English is essential.
