TREATMENT SPECTRUM & FOCAL POINTS
The Department of Neurology provides the entire range of neurological diagnostics and therapy at Heidelberg University Hospital. The department treats diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system and musculature. Over 230 employees and more than 140 nursing staff work closely together to ensure the best possible care and a smooth and interdisciplinary treatment process for all patients in our specialised outpatient clinics and on our wards.
We have extensive expertise in the clinical care of patients with brain tumours, chronic inflammatory CNS diseases (e.g. multiple sclerosis), movement disorders (e.g. Parkinson's disease), seizure disorders (e.g. epilepsy), headaches (e.g. migraines) and diseases of the peripheral nervous system (e.g. polyneuropathies). OUR FOCUS
NEUROONCOLOGY - We occupy a leading international position in neuro-oncology and are an integral part of the brain tumour programme of the National Centre for Tumour Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg. Every year, we treat >3,000 outpatients and >1,000 inpatients on a specialised ward with 18 beds. Unique selling points are the range of innovative clinical studies, the option of molecular stratification and the high density of specialised staff who deal with these rare but serious diseases and develop them further in basic research projects.
VASCULAR NEUROLOGY- The Heidelberg Stroke Unit is one of the largest units for the treatment of acute strokes in Europe. In 2015, >1,300 patients with acute stroke were treated here and in the neurological intensive care unit. We place particular emphasis on recanalising acute treatments (e.g. systemic thrombolysis and endovascular stroke therapy together with the team from the Department of Neuroradiology), which we also offer as a supra-regional centre in a teleneurological network. We are also developing these therapies further in clinical trials.
NEUROIMMUNOLOGY - The expertise of the neuroimmunology focus area is research into multiple sclerosis (MS), neuromyelitis optica, various autoantibody-associated neuroimmunological diseases and brain tumour immunology in close collaboration with the German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ) and the NCT. The focus here is on the transfer of basic science into everyday clinical practice within the framework of (inter)national, multi-centre studies for the development of new, targeted therapies. Our neuroimmunology outpatient clinic is certified as a "recognised MS centre" by the German Multiple Sclerosis Society (DMSG).
ACUTE AND INTENSIVE NEUROLOGY - The neurological intensive care unit in Heidelberg offers comprehensive, modern neurological intensive care medicine and training entirely under neurological supervision. In addition to the inpatient treatment of critically ill patients, we also take care of unstable patients in the emergency outpatient department and neuroradiology and, together with our anaesthesiological colleagues, provide the emergency service for the entire Kopfklinik and the NCT. Scientifically, our specialist area is one of the most recognised nationally and internationally in intensive care medicine; numerous studies are being carried out, in particular to improve the treatment of patients with severe strokes who require ventilation.
NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES AND MOVEMENT DISORDERS - As a specialised section, we are dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and research of neurodegenerative diseases and movement disorders. Our dedicated team of experienced neurologists, neuroscientists and medical specialists work hand in hand to provide you with the best possible diagnosis, treatment and support. Our aim is to treat patients with neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's or rare movement disorders (e.g. hereditary spastic spinal paralysis, ataxia, dystonia) holistically. We attach great importance to individual and patient-centred care that focuses on your needs and quality of life. We use state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures and innovative therapies.
